Games of the Day: Week 1

It’s finally here and I am ready for some football!

Thursday September 5, 2013 was the official opening nights of the NFL regular season.  The Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens played the Denver Broncos in the season opener.  But the performance Joe Flacco and the Ravens delivered fell way short of the caliber of a championship team.

Peyton Manning delivered his calculated, consistent, on the money play and thoroughly rocked Baltimore’s world.  Everyone was glad to see that massacre come to an end as the Broncos coasted a 49 to 27 victory.
The NFL regular season truly began Sunday September 8, 2013 as the first full weekend of contact got underway.  The first series of games had the Panthers against Seattle, Cam Newton and the boys continue their norm with a loss to Russell Wilson’s Seahawks 12 - 7.  While the Seahawks did not deliver what one might call a domineering win, a win is a win.

The Atlanta Falcons played a nail biter but lost in the final seconds against a charged New Orleans Saints 23 - 17.  Reggie Bush and the Detroit Lions rolled all over the Minnesota Vikings in their 34 - 24 victory.  Tom Brady’s Patriots squeaked by the Buffalo Bills 23 - 21 and believe it or not Miami beat Cleveland 23 -10.

Other scores in Week One

Oakland Raiders 17 Indianapolis Colts 21
Kansas City Chiefs 28 Jacksonville Jaguars 2
Tennessee Titans 16 Pittsburg Steelers 9

The Game of the Day had to be the San Francisco 49ers verses the Greenbay Packers.  These two squads played one hell of a great season opener.

Quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Aaron Rogers played in stellar fashion exchanging TDs all day long.  Kaepernick, who attempted to avoid a pumped up Packer’s Clay Matthews all day, threw in excess of 400 yards connecting with Vernon Davis and Anquan Bolten repeatedly for the win 34 to 28.

An officials’ blunder created some controversy but it is doubtful whether or not it would have changed the outcome.  It is this fan's opinion these two teams should be watched closely, as they’re both looking very good already.

The Sunday night game had paired the Dallas Cowboys hosting the New York Giants.  The eyes of the nation tuned in to a filled house in Arlington, Texas with folks eager to see the $108 Million Dollar Man, Tony Romo.  Romo secured a record high contract, especially given the fact he hasn't won a Super Bowl or even made it to the playoffs last year.  He must have one great agent or Jerry Jones is slipping in his old age.

Many a Dallas fan and every Dallas investor was disappointed and cringed throughout the night as Romo sputtered to and fro.  If anyone out there deserves an increase, it’s Jason Witten who Romo connected with throughout all four quarters.  The other noteworthy play had to be attributed to the entire Dallas offensive line.   These fellas kept the likes of New York’s Pierre-Paul at bay and only allowed two sacks.

The Dallas defense also played exceptionally well.  But as for Tony Romo, Jerry Jones has definitely missed a step and should start working to recover some of his money.
Eli Manning, the other overrated QB in Arlington Sunday night, in addition to stinking up the place, connected with Victor Cruz allowing him to Salsa three times . Final score was Cowboys 36 to Giants 31.

Monday Night has a double header scheduled with the Philadelphia Eagles Mike Vick squaring off in Landover, Maryland against Robert Griffin III (RG3) and the Washington Redskins.  The late game features the San Diego Charger against the Houston Texans.

Stay tuned football fans this has been an excellent start to what may prove to be a most memorable season.
