Castro, who had been isolated from other inmates for his own protection, was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years on August 1, 2013.  He was being held at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio.  His body was discovered at approximately 9:20 p.m.

Castro was arrested the evening of May 7, 2013 after Amanda Berry one of his captive broke a portion of a door and screamed for help until Charles Ramsey, a passing neighbor came to her aid.  Within hours of the escape of Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were also rescued from the house.   Shortly thereafter the world would be made aware of the decade long horror these three had faced. Castro was arrested later that evening.

The house at 2207 Seymour Avenue, where the three women were held for so many years was destroyed.  At the insistence of community members, city leaders had the house torn down at the close of the case.

Castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts in lieu of being subjected to the death penalty.  At his sentencing, Castro stated, “I am not a monster, I am sick.”

I disagree.  Castro was a confessed and convicted felon.  He stole the youth, innocence and lives of three girls.  He used them for his sexual gratification and pleasure.  He in all probability damaged their psyche beyond repair. He was indeed a monster.  A monster with crimes more than deserving of the death penalty.  Castro knew the penalty for kidnapping, rape and murder long before committing any of those crimes.

The people of Ohio should not have been burdened with maintaining the life of Ariel Castro.  Ohio should be thankful to learn of the demise of Ariel Castro and should not invest another dime or minute investigating his death.
