Major congratulations are in order for the young protesters
known as the “Dream Defenders”
on their victory in Tallahassee, Florida. In opposition to Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws this
organization staged sit-ins, occupying offices and corridors in the Florida
State Capitol building since July 16th.

Governor Rick Scott (R) stated he had no
intention of repealing the questionable laws, however after nearly three weeks Will
Weatherford (R), Florida State House Speaker on Friday conceded to opening
hearings with the state legislative branch.
Joined by world renowned singer, song writer, actor and
activist Harry Belafonte, this is a major victory for the Dream
Defenders as well as the people of Florida.
However it is only the first step in what could prove to be a very
lengthy journey.
Weatherford has assigned Representative Matt Gaetz (R) to
chair the hearings. Gaetz from Fort Walton
Beach, Florida and son of the Florida Senate President Don Gaetz is an ardent
supporter of the “Stand Your Ground”
laws.

Representative Gaetz says "I don't support changing
one damn comma of the stand your ground law.” He goes on to stated, “It would be reactionary and dangerous to make Floridians less safe to
pacify uninformed protesters." From this viewer’s perspective, there
is a significant portion of the state’s population greatly misrepresented by
these laws.
To the members and organizers of the Dream Defenders I am
compelled to say, in this era of lethargic thinking and inactivity it warms my
heart to see so many young activist taking a positive stance. It’s because of the unwillingness of our
population to say or do anything that laws of this nature were ever able to come
into being. It is good to see Dr. King's peaceful efforts again at work. I encourage you to
persevere. Stand Your Ground against
Stand Your Ground.
A great number of
supporters throughout this country are proud of you and are behind you.
